Hello again! Welcome to 2017, the year of the HACKER.
Not only has hacking grabbed the headlines for the November 2016 election, it is now spreading like wildfire in the general website community of North America. Why is this?
There are a lot of reasons why this is happening, but the main reason is the oldest reason known in history, and it’s spelled M-O-N-E-Y. Unregulated as the internet is, we can’t even call website hosts (the people who actually host the website pages on their servers) “unscrupulous” when they allow hacking (they could easily prevent) to occur for one primary reason: They want to sell you products that will do the jobs they used to do as a “good business practice.”
The hackers are not in it nearly as much for the money. The odds of them gaining anything from hacking a site like www.dentondigital.com, www.shannondrawe.com, www.texasflycaster.com – or any of the other websites I have had hacked in the last 30 days – the odds of their gains are ZERO. And I have learned a lot in the last 30 days – my gain.
However, the hassle factor is hard to estimate, and if time is worth money, then it is going to cost us all something to continue to have functioning websites going forward.
Until recently wordpress websites were very robust against internet hackers. However the landscape has changed as a) hosting companies find new profit streams by allowing hacking, b) hacking has become trendy, c) WordPress plugins and themes have aged and their creators have abandoned them – and the code is not being updated. That is about as simple as it gets.
Here is a good BLOG about fixing your own WordPress website at the root level of access – https://fixmywp.com/category/blog .
There are steps to help you secure your wordpress website from clandestine hackers, but you will not get out of this for free. That’s just not anybody’s goal in 2017. The goal by the higher powers is to allow hacking to get paid more money to prevent hacking. It’s just that simple. If this weren’t true, we would have been hacked a long time ago!
HOW TO START THE PROCESS OF STOPPING HACKING of WORDPRESS
I would advise my clients, who have their own hosting to talk to the hosts and ask them to block certain countries. If they are unwilling (they are completely able to do this), you know they are marching under new orders – TO PROFIT by protecting you from their own allowed weaknesses. You probably won’t get too far with this, and they will immediately begin to pitch more security services, more expensive hosting, site monitoring, site cleaning … essentially saying, “We can do nothing,” from the very moment contact is made. These are the times when we find out what our hosting providers really are made of.
Delete all plugins that have not been updated to latest WP version compatibility as soon as possible. Find new plugins that are up to date, and replace the old ones.
SPEND MONEY – Purchase a plugin for your WP site that can backup and protect your website. It will be an “inside job” by you – to watch it, control the settings and adjust to the bad guy’s adjustments. Be prepared to watch this all the time.
SPEND MONEY – Move your website pages hosting to a “Managed Hosting” company that monitors, cleans and protects your site(s) on an ongoing basis – and does this constantly for you.
In coming posts, I will tell you about what the YEAR OF THE HACK (2017) means for millions of websites of all kinds – in the USA. Stay tuned, and lock your doors.
